One inspiring brother in Christ recently shared with me about the nearly unbearable difficulties of his journey over the past ten years, even as he spoke of how much his love for Jesus had grown during that time. Now, as I reflect back on what he said, I feel for the struggles he’s been through. Yet I also can’t help but sense how much he has gained.

In fact, when I think about so many friends I’ve known who have truly been broken in some way, who have had to come to the end of themselves, where all that is left to say is “Jesus, you will have to take over because I don’t have a plan for this anymore,” they all seem to have gained immeasurably.

These folks carry a certain world-weariness—it’s true: “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

But there’s also an unstoppable light that shines out from within: “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life” (John 8:12).

And a rest that only comes from laying it all down at the cross: “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you” (Isaiah 26:3).

And a resolve that their reward in Heaven will be great: “Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you” (Matthew 5:12).

And a joy that won’t ever leave them: “I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure” (Psalm 16:8-9).

And, in the midst of my own trials, I am inspired by such friends to no end.

I hope this encourages you to be thankful for your faithful friends today.
